In math we took the Unit 7 test and spent a few days reviewing previously learned topics. The kids will get a mini math break for a few days following the math MCAS. In Science, we’ve started studying weather. It timed our perfectly with our visit from the WBZ meteorologist, Pamela Gardner (http://boston.cbslocal.com/video/3660414-wbz-tv-weather-school-visitsfoster-elementary-school-in-hingham-ma/). The kids have been asked to start watching weather reports at night to prepare them for creating their own! In social studies, we’re learning about the original 13 colonies. And will move on to slavery in the next week or so. In writing the kids have worked so hard to draft creative and well-written poems. We continue to spend time in class and at home turning rough drafts into final drafts. Stay tuned for the final poetry books! We are working hard to keep a healthy class! Cheers, Kathryn Dear 5A Families,
In math we are continuing our work in unit 7. This unit will not wrap up until the week after April vacation. We have tentatively scheduled the test for that Friday (4/28) and have built in review days leading up to it. In Science, we’re learning about Earth’s landforms, how changes happen, and how the changes can affect these features. In social studies, we’ve started learning about the first English settlements (Roanoke and Jamestown). The kids had a fun time writing a news story about the lost colony of Roanoke! This unit timed out perfectly with our visit from the Bay Colony Educators (Tim & Carol). They taught the kids all about many aspects of colonial life. Today’s presentation was especially memorable…ask your child about it tonight! In writing we are celebrating Poetry Month (April) by creating our very own poetry books! So far we’ve worked on Acrostic and brainstormed a shape for our concrete poems. There’s still many different poem styles to cover before our books are ready! Each child should be thinking about what they envision their final book to be. It is a unique project in that everyone can design their book however they would like (as long as they include the required poems!). Enjoy the pictures & videos below! Important Dates 4/5: Early Release 4/10: ELA MCAS day 1 4/11: Book Fair Visit (10:30am) 4/12: ELA MCAS day 2 4/13: ELA MCAS day 3 4/14: Good Friday (No School) 4/17-4/21: April Vacation 4/24: Back to school! 4/28: Unit 7 Math Test 4/28: Channel 4 Meteorologist Visit 5/1: All School K-9 assembly 10 am Miscellaneous Tissues and/or cleaning wipes would be appreciated! We are working hard to keep a healthy class! Cheers, Kathryn Dear 5A Families,
In math we will be breaking the Unit 6 test up into 2 days next Tuesday and Wednesday. Monday we will play Jeopardy to review, but students should be practicing skills by logging into their Everyday Math page and/or completing the practice problems in the study guide. In Science, we’ve had a lot of fun learning about rocks and minerals and are in the process of completing our poster project. This will become homework after a couple of more class periods next week. In social studies, we studied 8 important explorers who made an impact during the Age of Exploration, and then each student selected an explorer to research. They turned the information they found into a trading card. We’ll be presenting these next week. In writing we are still working on narratives, but have a new prompt to work with. The kids are finishing up rough drafts about what happens when they realize they are not alone in a strange house! Their goal is to maintain focus on the prompt while incorporating narrative elements they’ve learned. Important Dates 3/15: Class Ice Cream Party – thank you to Mrs. La Tanzi, Mrs. Fallon, & Mrs. Corey for helping out! 3/16: In-class STEM project 3/17: Term 2 Ends 3/24: Bay Colony Educators visit 5th grade 3/24: Practice ELA MCAS 3/24: Report Cards go home 3/25: Foster’s Talent Show @ HHS Miscellaneous Tissues and/or cleaning wipes would be appreciated! We are working hard to keep a healthy class! Cheers, Kathryn Dear 5A Families,
What a whirlwind of a few weeks! Today didn't quite feel like the day before vacation as we were trying to finish up some projects due to all the snow days! The Growth & Development videos that were supposed to be shown today were postponed to a later date still TBD. We did end our day with a fun 5th grade mint mobile grand finale showcase. Enjoy the pictures below from the last few weeks. In math we are cruising through Unit 6 (Investigations in Measurement; Multiplication and Division with Decimals). Our test is planned for after vacation (date TBD). In Science, we’ve had a lot of fun learning about rocks and minerals (with some sweet treats made as replicas of the different types of rocks!). The kids have been working through their Rock Cycle poster project in class. Parts of this may become homework after vacation. In social studies, we are learning all about 8 important explorers who made an impact during the Age of Exploration. The kids have been working in partners to read about and identify key features of each explorer, and we are making a class matrix. In writing we wrapped up a narrative using 2 non-fiction sources. It was awesome to see the kids excited about drafting a new piece of work. We will be doing more work with narrative after break. Important Dates 2.28: Rescheduled Curiosity Club 3.1: Early Release 3.2: Book Talks begin in reading 3.2: Field Science moved to today due to Early Release 3.7: Aquarion Water Treatment Field Trip Miscellaneous Enjoy your February vacation! :) Cheers, Kathryn Dear 5A Families, In math we are finishing up Unit 5 and will be taking the test on Friday, 1/27. Study guides went home yesterday, and a signature is due back this coming Thursday. The kids will play Jeopardy and have a day of differentiation as ways to review next week. In Science, the chapter 6 test will be next Tuesday. We’ve done a lot of review of the lessons in class as well as completed a study guide. On Monday we’ll play a few review games. In social studies we wrapped up our study of early civilizations in North America by completing an Inuit poster. Students wrote 3 paragraphs from the perspective of an Inuit focusing on their migration routes, natural resources, and tools/clothing adaptations. In writing we finished the MA Attraction 5 paragraph essay, and I have to say I was very impressed with the level of effort everyone put in. There are strategies we continue to work on to strengthen written work. Our next piece of writing will be a narrative using 2 non-fiction sources. In reading, the kids have been enjoying their new novel The Diving Bell as well as leading their Curiosity Clubs! Important Dates 1.24: Science Test – Chapter 6 1.27: Math Test – Unit 5 1.31: In-school celebration 2.1: Early Release – 12:30pm 2.2: February CML & Fact Test 2.3: Museum of Science Presentation 12-1pm Miscellaneous Please encourage the kids to dress appropriately to go outside no matter what the weather!
