Dear 5A Families,
Thank you again for attending Curriculum Night! It was wonderful to get a chance to meet you or see you again! I’m looking forward to a terrific year! It was an eventful few weeks in 5A…getting into the swing of things and mastering our routine! Our class community continues to develop through sharing and activities during Class Meeting and throughout the day. Your child’s blue folder (with comments sheet inside) should be returned to school with your child each Monday...even when there are no new comments!
Mrs. Avallone’s Notes:
Math continues to move along, and our first test is planned for next Friday! The study guide will go home Monday along with a sheet outlining skills the kids can practice through their EDM online login. The first fact test went well, though I know some are eager to do even better the next time around. Our science chapter has us digging into classification of organisms, as well as looking closer at vertebrates & invertebrates. For this chapter the kids did 1 mini-project on the levels of classification and yesterday they were assigned their second project. For this one they’ll need to research and build a vertebrate, then insert a backbone they built in class! Social studies has been a big hit with the decorating, smashing, burying, and excavating of pots. Since it was a partner activity, the remade artifacts will go home with one partner next week, decided on by rock, paper, scissors! The kids are wrapping up their archaeology unit by completing a quick 1 paragraph assignment detailing the role of archaeologists in our understanding of history. In ELA we’re breaking down genres of writing by annotating passages. Last, but not least, our Wordly Wise program is off to a great start. The online vocab test went well, and this week the kids took their first spelling test.
Mrs. Segal’s Notes:
This week in reading the students read a play called "A Royal Mystery" from our new Journeys program. They each had an opportunity to read a part and I think we may have some future actors/actresses among us. We continue to practice answering short answer questions and finding evidence from the story to support our answers.

Miscellaneous
This year I am asking for a donation of cleaning supplies and tissues. In order to stay healthy, we will wipe down desks, chairs, and other surfaces around the room often. This becomes especially important once cold and flu season begins. Cleaning wipes or paper towels help facilitate this. Of course, donations are optional, but would be much appreciated!
Cheers,
Kathryn
