Dear 5A Families,
We have officially completed our first month of fifth grade! By now, most students are familiar with the expectations and schedules. They should be comfortable with their routines both at school and at home. Thank you for all your support…it truly makes a huge difference! Battle of the Books is off and running, and the kids had their first “official” meeting day on Wednesday. I want to say THANK YOU to Deanna Blanch and Dana Fallon for being our 5A room parents this year! Lastly, THANK YOU SO MUCH to everyone who sent in wipes and tissues! We’ve already started putting them to great use!!
Mrs. Avallone’s Notes:
In math we’ve moved on to Unit 2 (Area & Volume). The kids seem to have a good overall understanding of these concepts so far! Hopefully they shared with you about the resources on their Everyday Math online account. Video tutorials and practice problems can be found there to help with reinforcement. This week the kids completed their first online homework (FrontRowEd.com). This type of hw will be given about every other week, assigned Monday and due by Friday morning. Of course, they are welcome to log in to practice math facts and challenge themselves with self-directed lessons, as well! The next fact test will be Thursday, 10/13. Our science chapter on classification wrapped up yesterday with the chapter 2 test! Next week we’ll begin chapter 4 and complete a fun STEM challenge! In social studies we’ve been studying the 3 branches of the U.S. government. Today, we played a game where a situation was posed and teams had to figure out which branch had the power to handle it and why! In writing we’re working on understanding how good organization of ideas strengthens written work. Groups sorted through 2 pages of details and arranged them to create a informative piece about the history of Disney World.
Mrs. Segal’s Notes:
In reading we have been exploring different genres. We started the week off reading and performing a play but then moved into a Realistic Fiction story. The story "Off and Running" connected well with our Social Studies lesson about the government and our current Presidential election. I introduced our first novel, Winn Dixie, which the students will be reading primarily at home. Specific chapters and assignments will be given at the beginning of each week and will be due on Fridays. The first packet will come home on Tuesday.
Important Dates
10/10: No School: Columbus Day
10/13: Math Fact Test
10/22: Fall Fair
10/28: Foster Halloween Party 3:30 – 5:30
10/31: In-Class Halloween Party
Miscellaneous
Enjoy the long weekend!
Cheers,
Kathryn
