Dear 5A Families,
Over the last few weeks we’ve been busy! In addition to our everyday activities, we had a fun STEM challenge and a few of our Steps to Respect lessons. Unicef boxes also went home, and if kids would like to participate by collecting spare change they can bring their boxes back when they are finished or by Friday, November 4th! Next week is looking like another exciting week…it’s hard to believe we are approaching the end of October already! The potluck was a huge hit, and the kids enjoyed sharing their dishes. We were all quite stuffed by the end. Lastly, I’d like to thank Stephanie Ward Wilson who is our 3rd 5A Room Parent that I accidentally left out of the previous letter – THANK YOU!!
Mrs. Avallone’s Notes:
In math we have been working hard in Unit 1, and wrapped up the unit with our assessment today. The Unit 3 family letter is going home to give you an idea for what is coming up (Fraction Concepts: Addition & Subtraction). We took a break from frontrowed.com this week to allow for preparation for the unit test. The kids will have another online assignment next week! Of course, fact practice should be happening multiple times per week! Science has us investigating Animal Growth & Heredity. You may have been asked some strange questions this week, like – are your earlobes attached, can you roll your tongue, and which thumb you put on top if you clasp your hands! All of these questions introduced us to dominant and recessive traits! As a fun way to apply understanding, the kids found a dominant and recessive trait they received from parents, and are creating a caricature of themselves to display them! Adaptations are another part of this chapter that we focus on so that we understand how species have been able to survive for so long. In social studies we have been discussing the process of an election. The kids have enjoyed learning about the different steps that go into it and how the popular vote doesn’t truly elect the President, the Electoral College does! In writing we are beginning to think about our next written piece – an expository 5 paragraph essay about a MA Attraction. More to come on this in the next letter!
Mrs. Segal's Note:
In reading this week we read a short story "Elisa's Diary". We discussed theme and what it meant for the character to overcome challenges. We also talked about sensory language and how it is used in poetry. Next week we will be reading Because of Winn-Dixie in class so please remind your child to bring his/her book to class on Monday.
