Dear 5A Families,
Another great few weeks here in 5A! For comments this week, the kids came up with their own goal and an action plan for progressing towards achieving it. Take a peek at the pictures/videos from our Ghost Catapult Engineering Challenge and Halloween party from last week! An important date has been announced for Monday, 11/21 – The 5th grade class photos will be taken for the yearbook. We understand illness is unavoidable, but otherwise strongly recommend all children being in school on this day so they can be part of the class photo!
Mrs. Avallone’s Notes:
In math we are about halfway through Unit 3 (Fraction Concepts: Addition & Subtraction). We are planning to have the unit test on Friday, 11/18. For many, fact practice should be happening multiple times per week still! As a class we are at 91% fluency! Our goal is to reach 95% individually and as a class by the end of the year, and we are already so close! Let’s see if we can achieve this goal! Lastly, the class took their first CML on Thursday. There are 4 more planned for the year (1 per month December – March). Our Science chapter on Animal Growth & Heredity is complete, and we started our study guide today in class. The chapter test is next Wednesday, which means next week we’ll spend time discussing and playing our review game. The caricature project is due Tuesday, 11/8. In social studies we continue to discuss the process of an election. It is very exciting, and the kids are looking forward to seeing how the real election wrap up compares to what we’ve been learning in class! In writing the kids selected a MA attraction and have been completing research about their site. We are working through the main idea paragraphs right now, taking time to craft interesting main idea sentences followed by strong detail sentences that paint a picture in their reader’s mind. In Reading Winn Dixie and Journeys continue to be the main texts being covered.
Important Dates
11/4: UNICEF boxes due back
11/6: HEF Spelling Bee
11/9: Science – Ch. 4 Test
11/11: Veterans Day – No School
11/18: Math – Unit 3 Test
11/21: Picture Retakes & Grade 5 Group Photos
11/23: Early Release – 11:30 (No Lunch)
11/24-11/25: Thanksgiving Holiday – No School
Miscellaneous
Typing will continue to be an integral part of 5th grade assignments and projects, and will most likely become a part of our state testing in the near future. Additional practice at home can only help! The kids have an account login from computer class to access to a program called Typing Agent that they can use at home, too!
Cheers,
Kathryn
