Dear 5A Families,
It was a great week here at Foster; learning about our new classroom and classmates was a lot of fun! This 5A bi-weekly newsletter will include important news and dates, and a run-down of what we have covered in class as well as what might be coming up. The kids will have a Friday Folder that comes home each week with graded work and a comments sheet. Comments are done every few weeks, and only require a signature when I add something new. If you’d like to write back there is a space for you to do so next to my comment! If your child has not completed a homework assignment that week, there will be a missing homework slip stapled to the side. 1 slip is filled out for each missing assignment. Please leave those attached to the paper when you return the signed comments sheet. Back on Track permission slips will be sent home in a few weeks, and after students reach 4 missing assignments in 1 term, they will be asked to stay for Back on Track. As always, the final decision for participating in Back on Track is entirely up to you.
Mrs. Avallone’s Notes:
We started the week with a scavenger hunt to get to know our classroom better. We did various activities that covered getting to know each other, too! Throughout the week we spent a lot of time reviewing expectations and routines for fifth grade. In math, we have taken a practice fact test and then jumped right into Unit 2 (Whole Number Place Value & Operations)! Our Science exploration began by “Saving Sam” our shipwrecked gummy worm. Students worked collaboratively to problem solve and save poor Sam. Next we completed a classification activity and previewed Chapter 2.
Mrs. Segal’s Notes:
We have been learning about one another as readers, our classroom procedures and expectations. I can already tell we are in for a year of exploration and excitement. In reading we have being discussing The One and Only Ivan and doing activities that focused on character traits, setting and discussion skills.
Important Dates
Curriculum Night Wednesday 9/21
Picture Day Thursday 9/22 3pm-7pm
Miscellaneous
This year I am asking for a donation of cleaning supplies and tissues. In order to stay healthy, we will wipe down desks, chairs, and other surfaces around the room often. This becomes especially important once cold and flu season begins. Cleaning wipes or paper towels help facilitate this. Of course, donations are optional, but would be much appreciated!
Cheers,
Kathryn
